S'pore Businesses Unprepared For H5N1 Virus Outbreak

SINGAPORE, March 29 (Bernama) -- Businesses in Singapore remain largely unprepared for the H5N1 outbreak despite concerns over the potential threat of bird flu, a study revealed today.

The study by market research group TNS was conducted this month across three of Asia's most dynamic economies - Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan -- each having been among the hardest hit by SARS in 2003.

The TNS poll found that 60 per cent of Singaporeans are currently more concerned about bird flu than they were last year.

"Yet whilst many are concerned enough to actively make changes to their daily routines such as improving personal hygiene (64 per cent) and eating less poultry (62 per cent), just 25 per cent believe the companies they work for have a preparedness plan in place to deal with a human H5N1 virus outbreak," the report said.

The report noted a "surprising" result that one of the industries revealed by the survey to be least prepared was hospitality.

"In spite of being one of the hardest hit industries during the SARS outbreak -- and according to 440 respondents likely to be the most affected industry sector should a bird flu pandemic occur -- only 20 per cent of restaurants and hotels in Singapore seem to have a formal preparedness plan in place," the report said.

Of the many industry sectors represented in the survey, those best prepared for an outbreak in Singapore were agriculture, education and the financing, insurance and real estate.

The report noted a positive result, however, in that while the majority of companies in Singapore do not have an official plan in place, most have either sent internal communications or staged presentations regarding the importance of personal hygiene in an attempt to allay their employees concerns.

30 March 2006

KUALA LUMPUR, March 30 (Bernama) -- The Tourism Ministry is considering making the Bigfoot mystery in Johor an attraction to bring more tourists to the country.

Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said Thursday the ministry would look into how to package the attraction but would not make up stories for visitors.

Apart from claims by several Orang Asli that they had sighted Bigfoot, there has been no proof as to its existence in the jungles of Johor.

It was similar to the Loch Ness monster in Scotland, the minister told reporters after launching the Special Hotel Packages 2006 booklet on hotel packages in the country.

IPOH, March 30 (Bernama) -- The state government will not compromise with its decision to ban the slaughter of chicken and duck at wet markets effective Saturday, said Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Tajol Rosli Ghazali.

He said traders have no excuse on why they should not adhere to the directive as this already being done by night market traders.

"The wet market traders can learn from the night market counterparts or hand over their business to the night market traders," he told a media conference after visiting the Kinta river dam project near here, Thursday.

Tajol Rosli however said in the immediate term, wet market traders can open small scale slaughter houses while awaiting local authorities to open slaughter houses.

The ban must be adhered to for the safety of all.

The Menteri Besar said this when asked on the request made by traders to defer the directive until the slaughter houses were ready.

The state government announced last week that effective April 1, the slaughter of chicken and ducks in wet markets are banned due to hygiene and also to keep in check the avian flu.

Meanwhile, on the Agriculture and Agro Based Industry Ministry's proposal that all commercial poultry breeding activities near ex-mining ponds and lakes to be shifted to keep away from the avian flu, Mohd Tajol said though he agrees to the proposal it had to be studied further.

Earlier duck breeders in Perak did not agree with the idea as ponds and lakes are necessary for breeding ducks.

Selesema Burung: Tiada Jangkitan Babitkan Manusia
